Sunday Style - Amish Quilts

Recently I took a trip with my sister into Amish country in Ohio. We drove by a cute Amish schoolhouse, where all the traditionally clothed children were outside playing baseball. While waiting for their turn to bat, the girls were all sitting on a long bench. Each was wearing a brightly colored long skirt that was being blown by the wind. The skirts were plain but beautiful in color - turquoise, bright green, purple, bright blue, pink.

Now, the Amish may not be your first thought for a modern fashion muse, but I was inspired by all these fresh colors - as well as the geometric shapes found in traditional Amish quilts. I found several examples of Amish and Amish-style quilts on Etsy, which will help illustrate my vision. The examples below, clockwise from top left, are from HouseofdeVeer, QuiltsByAmishSpirit, QuilteryOnline, and CottonLinenMoon

The Amish use a lot of blue in their quilts, so my first outfit features blue. The patchwork of the quilts is similar to the geometric piecing in this lovely peplum top (1) by VespertineCA, which also has a matching pencil skirt available. Add laurastamperdesigns' fun enamel earrings (2), cooljewelrydesign’s gorgeous lapis stretch bracelet (3), and EmmalynnJewellery’s modern square ring (4). All have geometric elements that will complement the outfit well. Put on a pair of amazing leather clogs (5) from LieblingShoes. The foldable clutch (6) by larakazis is versatile because it can be folded different ways to form different sizes of bags! Origami in action!

My next outfit features a marvelously graphic short summer dress (7) from TulipeStudio. Although not pieced like a quilt, the print looks as though it is - with its geometric shapes in shades of pink. For jewelry we will add the golden triangles found in the necklace (8) from venusvelvet, and the dangle earrings (9) from ELEVEN13. Since these jewelry pieces also feature silver, we will add LittleAppleNY’s mixed metal bracelets set (10).

Do we need more golden triangles? Of course we do if it’s in the form of a luxe crossbody bag (11) from PurJusShop! Show off your legs with some fun gladiator sandals (12) from TheSquareMoon. Maybe even paint those toes in an intense lime green nail polish (13) by BadBitchPolish that will really pick up on the accent color in the dress.

See you next week!
