Repurpose Those Soda Cans!

Don't chuck that can out! Our fabulous JET Team leader "Emo" has a great way to repurpose your used cans!

In search of a project to entertain the kids? The grandkids perhaps? Look no further! This project is simple, fun for all ages, and can easily be completed in an afternoon!

All you need is an old soda can, a can opener, a bit of dirt, and a plant (flower seeds work well, but they don't give the instant satisfaction kids crave!)

Once your materials are gathered you are ready to start. The first thing you will want to do is rinse the can with cold water to get any remaining soda out. If the can has been sitting for awhile, use warm water and a pinch of salt to loosen any sugars inside.

Once the can has been rinsed, you're ready to make your pot. Simply clip your can opener to the top of the can and slowly twist it. The top of the can will start to curl off. The can itself won't be sharp, but the lid of the can will have sharp edges.

Make sure little fingers don't get too close. A pair of garden gloves may help protect little fingers, but aren't necessary for older children. Your can should look like this after your top is removed....

Your pot is done and all that is left is the fun part- adding some dirt & finding the perfect little plant for your new pot!

Here are a few things to think about....
  • Different plants require different amounts of water
  • Make sure your plant or flower doesn't require more room than your can provides, or you will soon be transplanting it to a new pot
  • Some plants (such as african violets) require water from the roots up - if this is the case you will need to poke tiny holes in the bottom of your can and put a lid under it for watering
  • Make sure you choose the right soil for your plant

These make excellent little gifts to take home to mom, to share with a friend, to give to your teacher, or anyone else who brings a smile to your face.

Have fun with your children! Turn the television off, put some music on, and create some wonderful memories!

great idea especially for indoor plants ... nothing survives outdoors here, as there are midnight visitations. Super activity for kids, big or little.
