Museums with a Toddler?

Welcome back to the JET Team blog! Several members of our team are juggling jewellery-making with bringing up babies and very young children. Today, Bev of Linkouture tells us what happened when she visited a museum with her toddler!

"Last fall, Harvard University reopened their newly renovated art museums. I had never been before, so I decided to take my daughter, Eve, on a mother-daughter outing there to explore. At this point I should probably also mention that Eve is a very young toddler, and she is still relatively new to walking!

She was much more interested in doing her little toddler shuffle around the big rooms, batting her eyes at the docents (the people who act as guides) and testing the limits of her vocal abilities, than she was in looking at the exhibits! But who could blame her, when her voice echoed so beautifully?

While some might see a trip with a toddler to an art museum with invaluable treasures a disaster waiting to happen, it actually went quite smoothly. Thankfully Eve is not yet steady enough on her feet for me to worry about her running away! Was she loud? Er, admittedly - yes! But at least we went at the very end of the day, and made it for a very short visit.

While I do plan on taking her on more museum outings, I think I may stick to the Harvard Natural History Museum until she's a bit older (and has a better understanding of how to use her indoor voice). In the meantime, we'll continue to explore art materials at home!"

  7. I love that you're making art such a part of her life, even though it's a little tough during these toddler years. She will benefit from it over the long run and thank you for it later! Great article!

  9. Very brave of you Bev, but introducing your daughter to great culture at an early age will pay dividends in the future, and she will thank you for it when she's older!

  13. I love to see children of all ages introduced to the arts, it's so stimulating for their minds. Their minds are like sponges at that age!
