Emeralds: The Traditional Birthstone for May

Emeralds are a beryl mineral that is colored green by small amounts of chromium. Beryl is one of the most important gem minerals. Otherwise colorless,  it is the many different impurities that give beryl its varied coloration. Without these splendid color varieties, beryl would be a rather ordinary gemstone with only average fire and brilliance. Emerald is the green variety and Aquamarine is the blue variety of beryl.

As you may know, emeralds are vibrant and a historical symbol of renewal. Often thought to attract success, personal growth and inner peace. Even though many emerald gemstones are enhanced, their natural form is still a beautiful sight!

The rough stone above becomes this heirloom:

This gorgeous green gemstone was mentioned in the following old English nursery rhyme:
“Who first beholds the light of day
In spring’s sweet flowery month of May
And wears a Emerald all her life,
Shall be a loved, and happy wife"

Emeralds are one of the most rare and precious gemstones in the world and their price reflects this. However, while you are saving your pennies, there are other "emerald" green gemstones and glass jewels that are also lovely . You can even find synthetic, lab formed emeralds. Emerald green cubic zirconium and Swarovski crystals are spectacular.

You do not have to be born in May to love these heirloom gemstones. What is not to love?
